MSQL Service Writer .vs. VSS

  • Quick question: on backups of SQL DB using VSS .vs. VDI.

VSS using MSQL Writer Service - can the logon account be different from the VSS logon account and how will this impact VSS or MSQL server?

  • Thanks for posting your issue and hopefully someone will answer soon.

This is an automated bump to increase visibility of your question.

  • I thought VDI was the interface by which backups are made? VSS is what pauses transactions so you can get a consistent view.

I have no idea on the accounts. Can I ask what you're trying to do here?

  • Hi Steve -

VSS uses a local NT SYSTEM account -

MSQL Writer is part of VSS -- can the MSQL Writer Service use a different account name than VSS account name?

I'm just trying to understand how VSS would behave on a MSQL backup if we changed the MSQL Writer Service name from a local NT account to a domain account.

  • No idea. I can ask the question, but why would you change this? Domain accounts are used often when you need to control security and access outside of the host. For VSS, not sure this would be needed in any way.
