I have the need to move my database to a newer faster server. They both will have the same version of SQL, 2000. The new server will be Windows 2003 server, where the old one is 2000 server. Can I load a new copy of SQL on the new server and copy the de-attached database to it and then re-attach?

Sure. I use Backup/Restore, but I think dettach/attach will work too. here's a link that will be helpfull if you have any users to move: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/246133
