I have a new app that is going to require several new databases, all primarily storing BLOB data (PDF's). The amount of I/O activity is currently unkown. However, we are considering adding the DB's to a current SQL 2000 standard installation, but I am worried about memory requirements.
So, my rather vague question is this...we would really like to avoid SQL Enterprise edition because of the cost per processor at 4 times standards cost. Has anyone ever added 2GB of memory to a standard installation - thus resulting in 4GB of total system memory and only 2GB usable by SQL?
How much will 4GB total memory affect TOTAL SERVER performance on an SQL install that only recognizes 2GB?
Any ideas would be appreciated.

Tried 2GB and 4GB total. Not sure about anything in between. Having 1GB for the OS is a nice cushion for paging, swapping, drivers, etc. Not sure if 4 is better than 3, but harder to get 3 in a system.

I have not seen a significant amount of difference on the machine I tested at least for SQL itself.
