Migrating from 2005 to 2008 or waiting to upgrate to 2012?

  • Prices are evil, but the product is priceless 😉

Price goes up, the more you want to protect that product you purchased and get the most out of it. Thanks for the job, M$ products!

  • Very true, I am enjoying 2012 atm. Working on my 5th clustered test environment;-)

  • Here is a url for the latest (April 2012) version of the Microsoft SQL Server 2012 Licensing Guide. The document went from 7 pages to 21, so a lot of detail has been added. Prices could be acceptable, depending on your current SA status and/or current SQL level. They even included a comprehensive section on VM environments. Happy reading!!

As for staying at one version and upgrading to 2008 "later", we discovered that our normal 'source' for MS software no longer has SQL 2008 in their April price list. They "no longer carry SQL 2008 software." You might HAVE to jump to 2012 ( we would anyway, as our best prices are through this state organization...and they no longer carry 2008 R2 or regular...) if your software vendor has done what ours did. So, even if your software vendors have not upgraded their products to SQL 2012, you may get to be on the bleeding edge for your expensive software...or you may have to just stay at 2005 until the vendor gets around to porting it up to 2012...... then you'll get to spend the big bucks for 2012 licensing.
