Management Studio: Grouping Databases

  • Does anyone know a way of grouping databases inside parent nodes in the object explorer.

    Currently the hierarchy in the treeview is as follows:

    [Databases]->[All Databases in server]

    What I would like to be able to do is group all databases to do with one department into one parent folder.

    Example:

    [Databases]->[Sales]->[All Databases to do with sales]

    [Databases]->[Marketing]->[All Databases to do with Marketing]

    Etc.

    An example of this is seen with...

    [Databases]->[System Databases]->[Master]

    Is there any way to do this.?

    I have searched but found only ways of grouping registered servers and filtering databases.

    Regards

    Jason.

  • There is no facility in Management Studio for creating custom folders in Object Explorer for grouping objects. Though it's an interesting feature. Where would you expect the groups to be saved (on the server or on the client)?

    If they're on the server then all users who connect to the server would see the same groups (or they could store them by logon which means you could roam around and your groups would follow you).

    If they're on the client each user would have their own groups and they wouldn't be shared. This is the way registered servers works.

    Cheers,

    Dan
