I found typing the information each time was a little longer but safer. And once, I changed the registry, one thing lead to another and I ended up rebuilding the PC.
I am running sql2005 now and monitor all my database (2000 and 2005) and have not had that problem since (3 months now). I would suggest using 2005 monitoring tools.
