Looking for DBA Checklist

  • Hello All,

My company is in the process of developing an official enterprise wide database administration group. I will be heading the group up.

I am wondering if anyone has a checklist that they find helpful in taking responsibility for new and/or existing SQL Servers.

  • I think this varies so widely that it's tough to have a good checklist that you're not skipping items. A good idea, just not sure it's something that works well.

Things I do want to know:

    1. SQL Version

    2. Patches applied (including SPs)

    3. sa pwd

    4. Security mode

    5. backup strategy

    6. db contacts

  • Thanks for the response! I think that you are right about how widely some of these things could vary.

  • We have a spreadsheet housing the requisite information per each server. Here is a list of things we 'keep track of.' Not really referenced by the seasoned folks, but a nice tool to get the newbies up to speed.

Good luck with the new position.

    NT Machine

    IP Address

    NT O/S Version

    NT Service Pack

    NT O/S License

    NT CPUs

    NT Memory

    Role

    MS-SQL Server

    MS-SQL Version

    MS-SQL Code Page

    MS-SQL Service Pack

    MS-SQL Home

    MS-SQL SA PWD

    MS-SQL Security

    MS-SQL Memory

    MS-SQL Engines

    MS-SQL Conn.

    MS-SQL Mail Account

    Database(s)

    Primary User Contact

    Primary DBA Contact

    Primary NT Contact

  • Yopu should also get these

    Network Connection Type

    Network Connection Speed

    Domain/ADS/StandAlone

    Domain/ADS Name

NT Hard Drive configuration and capacity

    SQL file layouts

ANd it is good to get a base line of SQL statistics. Database/log growth, memory utilization, cpu utilization, page splits, cache hit ratio, et ct. You want to get a basic idea of the servers current health so when issues occurr you have and idea of where it is being most affected.
