Does anyone have any experience with running SQL 2008R2 in a VM on a Mac?
Configuration:
MacBook Pro running OS10.6 (snow leopard)
Windows 7 64-bit Ultimate guest OS in Parallels Desktop for Mac virtual machine
SQL Server 2008 R2 Developer Edition - 1 named instance
Named Pipes and TCP/IP enabled in 32-bit & 64-bit
Problem:
SQL server installed fine and seems to be running ok except that it cannot see its own local instance. I can browse to it as a network server, but nothing is listed under local servers.
Not sure if this is a SQL configuration problem or something in the VM that's interfering.
Any thoughts for troubleshooting this would be appreciated!!

Do you have the browser service running? Have you tried connecting via the instance name (machine\instance)?

Hi Jason,
Yes, browser service is running, and yes, I can connect using machineName\instanceName from the Network Servers tab.

So, from where are you unable to connect? Do you also have an unnamed instance installed? If you only have a named instance, then you have to connect by instance name.
