Linked Server to DB2 on RS6000

  • I am in need of some guidance with a linked server issue.

We currently have a SQL 2005 environment with a linked server accessing DB2 on RS6000 using an ODBC System DSN. The connection was stable until we recently outsourced the server offsite and it is now behind a firewall.

I can test the connection from the database server using the DB2 Client Configuration Config utility and I can connect from my local workstation using AQT (Advanced Query Tool) with the same ODBC setup, but the linked server will no longer connect using the same System DSN.

The ODBC entry is configured to communicate over port 50086, but is there still some communication over ports 1433 / 1434 because the communication is initiated from SQL Server?

I should add that we can exclude any MSDTC ports as it is read only traffic and the syntax was specifically engineered to get around escalation to a distributed transaction.

Any assistance you can provide will be greatly appreciated. We are in the process of manipulating firewall rules, but because of the outsourcing our security protocols have added many layers of latency and I may not know if this is the cause of my problem for weeks.
