Morning all,
Over the weekend, one of my servers decided that the linked server was no longer going to function.
I have had this error once in a while of the occasional semaphore timeout period has expired - due to some type of internet lag.
But not this time.
I can not get the object to work at all any more.
I tested the Linked Server object, and the Test connection - passes, yet when I try to use it in any simple query - it dies.
I am getting 3 messages -- 1 OLE DB provider "SQLNCLI11" returned message "Unspecified Error" and 2 "Communication link failure".
Then it says Msg 121 Level 16, State 1 Line 0
TCP Provider: The semaphore timeout period has expired.
Anyone have any pointers to which direction I should go with this?
My first thoughts are maybe the server needs to be rebooted.
Any pointers are appreciated.
Thanks,
Tonya

Looks similar to what we had encounter with our servers when DTC was not enabled on a link server. Maybe this will help you with resolving the error:

Found the Answer !!
Apprently there were some networking routing changes done, and a Delay in the Router was added.
The Delay was removed, and now everything works fine.
Thanks for taking the time to review!
