I set up a linked server to access an Excel spreadsheet. This worked fine. I left for an hour to have lunch and I now get the error;
Server: Msg 7399, Level 16, State 1, Line 1
OLE DB provider 'Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0' reported an error. Authentication failed.
[OLE/DB provider returned message: Cannot start your application. The workgroup information file is missing or opened exclusively by another user.]
Can anybody shed light on how I right whatever has come unstuck with permissions here.
Cheers

It looks like there is another active thread to this file. Make sure no one else is accessing the File exclusively. Read-Only is fine. I do see these kinda problems specifically with Excel

I have bounced the box and have exclusive use of the Excel file. I made the file read-only and I get the same message. What does the 'workgroup information file' relate to that's mentioned in the error message?
I've done some seraches and found reference to this problem with Access, but I'm getting it on Excel and Text files. Which makes me think the workgroup file is currupt or missing.
I've deleted and reinstated the Linked Servers but still no good?
