Linked server, Error 17 SQL Server does not exist or access denied.

  • Hi, I have three servers S1, S2, S3 running SQL server 2000 with mixed mode authentication and I configure linked server among them.

Linked server from S2 can connect to S1 but linked server from S1 can't not connect S2. While linked server from S1 can connect to S3. I think there are some problem in server S2 but I can't find exactly the cause.

In Enterprise Manager in S1, I can register S2 OK. However when I click in Tables icon of linked server there is an error message ERROR17 SQL Server does not exist or access denied and it does not show any table there.

This means that I can connect to S2 fine but not by linked server.

Can any one help me to find the problem ?

  • Hi,

Iam facing the same problem kindly help me out if there is someone who knows about this issue.

  • What security context is set for the linked server?

  • Instead of selecting SQL Server, try selecting the SQL Server OLEDB driver from the drop down list.
