License Detail Require

  • Hi Friends,

I have Web Server and DB server, I want to install SSRS on Web Server and DB on different node so i need to understand weather i have to purchase a License for SSRS or not.

If yes then which license i have to purchase "CAL or Processor Based License".

    Regards

    Deepak Bhardwaj

  • If you install SSRS on your web server then yes you will need a licence for this.

For example I have 5 servers in my data warehouse environment, one which is the DB engine, one which is used for SSAS, one which is used for SSIS and two which are used for a scaled-out SSRS solution. This means that I need to purchase 10 CPU licences for compliance as each server has 2 physical CPU sockets.

In your instance, are the reports going to be public facing so people outside of your company can access SSRS or company facing so only people in your company can access SSRS?

If public facing then how many people can access the SSRS server and its DB backends?

If company facing only, how many employees can have access to SSRS?

Do you have CAL's at the moment? If so how many? Are they assigned to users or devices?

If its going to be company only and you have 50 staff, and already have 50 CAL's assigned to each member of staff, then you just need to purchase the server licence.

On top of this, the servers that the data sources in the reports link to, how are they licenced already as that will also need to be taken into consideration.

Personally I've always gone for processor licences as it saves any hassle with CAL's due to how large the companies are which I have worked in and can work out cheaper to go CPU than CAL.

  • Thanks for Update...

  • Your welcome, if you can answer the questions in my post, we will be able to tell you which is the best way to licence SSRS for you.

  • I have 2 servers one is application server and one is DB server.

On application server we need to install SSRS and point the DB which is seating on DB server.

we do not have CAL license and CPU based license till date...

  • we do not have CAL license and CPU based license till date...

So you have no licences what so ever? Or only CPU licences?

    Question 1

In your instance, are the reports going to be public facing so people outside of your company can access SSRS or company facing so only people in your company can access SSRS?

    Question 1.1

If public facing then how many people can access the SSRS server and its DB backends?

    Question 1.2

If company facing only, how many employees can have access to SSRS?

Question 2, already answered, you have no CALs

Do you have CAL's at the moment? If so how many? Are they assigned to users or devices?

    Question 3,

how is your current DB server licenced?

  • So you have no licences what so ever? Or only CPU licences?

    Question 1

In your instance, are the reports going to be public facing so people outside of your company can access SSRS or company facing so only people in your company can access SSRS?

Ans: Its Company Facing only people in comnay can access SSRS.

    Question 1.1

If public facing then how many people can access the SSRS server and its DB backends?

    Ans: N/A

    Question 1.2

If company facing only, how many employees can have access to SSRS?

    Ans: 150 Users

Question 2, already answered, you have no CALs

Do you have CAL's at the moment? If so how many? Are they assigned to users or devices?

    Ans: No Cal License

    Question 3,

how is your current DB server licenced?

    Ans: 4 CPU Based License.

  • Probably work out cheaper to go CPU then if your installing SQL Standard SSRS, if Enterprise SSRS CAL will probably work out cheaper in the short term, but as more and more people join the company it might be cheaper to get CPU.

Last prices for the product with SA from our MS reseller where (approx)

    £250 for a CAL

£1,500 for SQL Standard Server for use with CAL's

£7,000 for SQL Enterprise Server for use with CAL's

£6,500 for SQL Standard CPU Licence

£23,000 for SQL Enterprise CPU Licence

Will be a case of getting prices and working out the tipping points between CAL's and CPU's inline with buisness growth and adding more SQL servers to the estate.

The other option you have is to install SSRS on the DB server and then you dont need to buy any more licences, but thats only if it is an option for you.
