"library not registered"

  • hiya,

    I have the following error when i try to add a new database diagram to my sql2k:

    <error>

    library not registered

    <\error>

    <setup>

    OS: win XP

    database: sql2k sp3

    I've upgraded to MDAC 2.8, still no joy.

    <\setup>

    I went to a site that states that there is no need to upgrade to sp3a to solve this problem.

    http://msdn.microsoft.com/data/downloads/updates/default.aspx#MDACDownloads

    I would install sp3a, but it appears that this will install an OLDER version of MDAC.

    ..any suggestions?  I can do a complete unistall then re-install if required, but I don't know if that would solve my problem.

    many thanks,

                      yogi

  • What was the exact error message?

  • hi Brian, this is the exact error mesage:

    <error>

    "library not registered"

    <\error>

    It happens when I try to add a new diagram to sql2k.

    eg, "Create database diagram wizard" dialog

    I select a table,

    I click the "Add>" button

    I click the "next" button,

    then I click "finish"

    the error then occurs.

    Does this shed any light?

  • Do you have Crystal Reports 8.0 installed on your system?

    K. Brian Kelley
    @kbriankelley

  • hi Brian,

    it turns out that I do indeed have crystal 8.0 installed.

    I went to the folowing URL:

    http://support.businessobjects.com/library/kbase/articles/c2007581.asp

    however, I am not currently using crystal reports.

    I get the error when i try to open a new diagram in enterprise manager, in sql2k, as explained in previous post.

    I am using vis studio 2003, if this is relevant.I am also on win XP.

    Does this shed any light?

    many thanks,

    yogi

  • Crystal Reports 8.0 modified permissions in the registry. Unfortunately, this broke quite a few other systems, to include ASP web pages, etc. You might try and reset permissions based on that KB article and see if that suddenly gets things working again.

  • hi Brian.

    OK, now Iā€™m really in trouble,

     I:

    1)      downloaded the .exe that should have reset the registry permissions. (scr8_webregfix.exe)

    2)      Ran it.

    Still the same error when I try to add a new diagram..

    I then:

    1) unistalled sql server

    2) Re-installed it.

    Now the sql service will not even run!

    In enterprise manager, I have  a single group.

    It now looks like this:

    <sqlServerGroup>

    (Local) (Windows NT)

    (Connection failed, check SQL Server registration properties)

    <sqlServerGroup>

    I right-click and try to edit the properties.

    Nothing,,,

    I even go into admin tools and manually start:

    1) MSSQL$instanceName

    2) SQLAgent$instanceName

    But it still does not start.

    Where can I go from here? Iā€™m really struggling

  • SQL Server doesn't start or your Enterprise Manager connection?

    K. Brian Kelley
    @kbriankelley

  • sorry Brian, i wasn't making sense.

    1) yes, sql server service runs.

    2) yes, enterprise manager runs.

    However, when I view the sql server group (in the "console Root" of enterprise manager), it is as follows:

    <sqlServerGroup>

    (Local) (Windows NT)

    (Connection failed, check SQL Server registration properties)

    <sqlServerGroup>

    I can't seem to connect to it, beforehand, I could:

    1) connect no problem

    2) return data to my .net app

    the only problem was that I couldn't create a new diagram in enterprise manager.

    Now, after:

    1) running the .exe that the KB site recommended.

    2) uninstalling and re-installing sql server

    ...I can't connect at all

    Is there any way (short of reformatting my whole hard drive) that I can get a normal, working instance of sql server onto my PC?

    I'm going daft here.

  • You said you installed an instance. Try, just for grins, to connect to the server using \.

    @kbriankelley

  • hi Brian,

    thanks for staying with this šŸ™‚

    I'll have to try tomorrow.it's evening here in scotland.I'll keep googling tonight to see if  I can toubleshoot a bit more.Thereby buying me more options for tomorrow.

    Not ideal , but I have to keep trying.

  • morning,

    I tried to connect using "\." but I got the error:

    <error>

    Unable to connect to server .\:

    Server: Msg 17, level 16, state1

    [ms][odbc sql server driver] [dbnetlib] sql server does not exist or access is denied]

    <\error>

    also, when I righ-click the node in EM and select "start"

    I get an error:

    <error>

    service control failure

    an error 1060 -( the specified service does not exist as an installed service) occurred while performing this service operation on the MSSQLServer service.

    <\error>

    EM, runs no problem.

    I hope that no-one minds that this post is getting a wee bit off-topic, but I suppose it is still relevant in the sense that the steps that I took to try and solve my original problem have contributed to my current situation.

    Should I supply more info?All help appreciated.

  • Sorry, I didn't go back and look at the post, I had put servername and instancename in between greaterthan and lessthan signs, making it look HTML code...

    try:

    Servername\Instancename

    (local) will try and connect on the local system against a default instance (no instance name). If you have a named instance, you need to specify it for the connection.

    K. Brian Kelley
    @kbriankelley

  • ok Brian,

    I can now connect using "Servername\Instancename", thanks

    Now, when I try to create a new diagram, I get the useless  error:

    <error>

    an unexpected error happened during this operation

    [MS Design tools- class not registered]

    <\error>

    something is obviously seriously wrong, it's 2 steps forwards 3 back.

    I suspect that the scr8_webregfix.exe that I downloaded from crystal has caused problems. Is there anything else that I can do to dignose/ solve this?

    ta,

    yogi
