Is there a way to estimate size of an index?

  • I recently tried to create an index but it filled the disk and failed. Is there a way to at least estimate the size of an index before it is created? The table in question is pretty deep, 815,103,933 rows at last count. I knew indexes consume a lot of disk, but any way to estimate this?

    Thanks!

  • it really depends on the data type, microsoft outlines the steps for sizing clustered and non-clustered indexes here;

  • Thanks for the link Steve,

    This is a lot more complex than I had hoped for but it looks like it should be what I was looking for.

    Remember when a terabyte was an unimaginable amount of disk space? 😀
