Is it possible to specify SQL Server Instance Number

  Can you specify which Instance Number Microsoft must use when you install a new instance? This is the MSSQL.1 number.

  I have a massive cluster with over 30 instances on it, but it is rather tedious to maintain because the Instance Numbers differ from node to node.

  I am about to rebuild the entire cluster (machine refresh) and now have the opportunity to rectify this issue, if possible.

  I don't believe that's something you can control directly. Could be mistaken, but I don't think so.
