Installing SQL Server 7.0

  • Hello Again,

Now I am getting something that I haven't seen before. When I install SQL Server 7.0 on a Windows 2000 Server SP2, I get a prompt for the Windows 2000 CD because some files have been overwritten. It says it has to do with Windows file protection or something like that. What is this? I haven't ever had to do that before. Any help is much appreciated.

  • Entirely possible. The Windows protection should prevent older files from being written. I'd suspect that SQL might write older files than SP2. Install SQL 7, add the service packs and then reapply W2K SP2. (or 3)

  • Well actually, now when I try to install SQL Server 7, just when it is stopping and then starting the service, it hangs for quite a long time and then I get a Windows error that it "Failed to configure the server". I checked the .out file in the mssql7/install directory and it basically has the course of events....remapping system databases, then stopping service, then starting server, and then a message that it failed to start and could not configure the server. Not a whole lot of error messages to go on.

  • I answered my own question....you can't install SQL Server from a terminal services client.

  • Brian, you are correct. You cannot install SQL Server 7.0 as well as apply SP's via TS Client.
