Hi,
I am installing SQL Server (my first time on a Server) and our techie has asked what volume partitions i want.
I told them i wanted an OS partition and a data partition, when he asked did i also want a transaction log partition. I went looking into the documentation and couldnt find mention of having an absolute need for one. But it got me thinking and since i have noone here to bounce off you all got the short straw.
How many partitions should i look at setting up and what should they be used for.
Thanks in advance
Shane.

Don't have different partitions, just make sure you have different drives for data, log and binaries. Sometimes it is recommended to have a different index drive too.
But before you make your choice, look for raid 0, raid 1 and raid 5. These all have their specific parameters for using with databases. Then decide how much I/O your application is going to need etc.
