I have 2 servers eg Server A and Server B
Server A has:-
Windows 2000 with SP2
Backup Exec v8.6
Citrix Metaframe XP v 1.00
1 x Window 2000 licence
50 Client licence
50 Terminal licence
50 Citrix Metaframe Licence with 1 server licence
Server B has:
Windows 2000 with SP 2
Arcserve 2000 W/G v7.0
Arcserve SQL Agent
1 x Windows 2000 server licence
5 Windows 2000 client licence
2 Processor SQL server licence
both servers A and B has:-
Drive C: 8Gb D: 26Gb
Dell PowerEdge 2500
Raid level 5
3 x 18Gb disks
2Gb RAM
DLT tape drive
So far our offsite engineers have installed SQL Server 2000 on Server B and are on the verge/warming up to importing our database from Impact/Encore.
Question 1.
Could you see any up and coming problems that you think could arise that we need to look out for – am hearing we may have problems with the Citrix Metaframe from what I have read.
After this is done – we are hoping for 2 other servers (Proteus Server and Lims Server) to have the ability to connect to the new imported database.
Proteus Server
Caldera Open Server (SCO open server Unix 8)Proteus Accounting software v6.2.00
Progress v9.1c
Lims Server
Windows 2000 Server with SP3
Arcserve 2000 WrkGrp v7.0 with SP2
Arcserve Open Files Agent
Question 2.
What will be needed so that users on both the Proteus and Lims Servers can read/pull information to/from their own database and sql database – I read about OBDC, am I on the right lines here.
Thanks in advance for all those that reply and I hope I have given enough info.

Wow, quite a configuration. I don't know that there is a definitive answer to your question until you talk to your vendors in all cases. However, I can say that SQL Server likes to live alone so, if there are reported issues with having SQL Server and Citrix on the same server I would not be surprised. If ArcServ will let you move the database to it's own SQL Server box you would be better off all the way around. IMO.
As part of the MDAC components that Microsoft installs there are ODBC drivers as well as OLEDB connections available for almost every type of connection you can imagine so, giving another application access to the data should not be an issue. However, as stated earlier, I would talk to the vendor.
Not a definite answer in either case but hopefully it will get you started.

Citrix doesn't recommend this configuration. One of the reasons has to do with the fact that one typically changes the system drive to M:\ and this causes problems with the SQL Server install. There are workarounds and you can find them in Citrix's Knowledge Base. I've been burned by this personally.
Technically, though, you don't have to have SQL Server as your data store... you can use Access and Citrix provides tools to do real-time backups and the like.
