Installing SQL 2005

  • Have been looking for any information pertaining to installing SQL 2005 to a UNC or mapped drive. The situtation is, we built a virtual server and stored the vmc and vhd files on a SAN, and want to install SQL 2005 to another SAN drive, which is obviously not a local drive. Does anyone know how to do this?

One other option we have, is to install SQL to the "local drive" and then move the databases to another drive (mapped), then attach the databases. But the question then becomes, where are the transaction files located? On the "local drive" or the mapped drive with the databases?

    Any help would be appreciated.

  • Well, I did manage to figure out how I can trick SQL to load to a SAN drive instead of a local drive. But, I am still unsure how to load SQL properly. Ideally, I would like SQL to install on the C: drive and have the databases on the SAN drive. But, when I installed it, some components installed on C: and others on the SAN, but for some reason all the databases installed on C:\. I thougth by changing the installation directory in the install wizard would install only necessary components to the C: drive and everything else, including the databases, to the drive specified. Am I going to have to do a backup and restore to move the databases to the SAN? If so, which directories do I have to copy or move to make this work. Seems like a lot of work to store your databases in another location. You would think that Microsoft would make that option much easier.

Any help that you can provide is greatly appreciated.
