So I have a couple servers. One system is configured Active/Passive. I want to update this to Service Pack 2, however I've read in some places that there is the possibility of a reboot. I would like to avoid rebooting or the down-time of rebooting if possible.
So would this installation process be viable or would I need to make some modifications?
1. Backup databases
2. Verify Task Scheduler is running on Passive node. Check to make sure no remote desktop connections are on the Passive node.
3. Run the SP2 executable package on the Active node. Select Instance to upgrade, enter credentials and continue.
At this point, according to Microsoft documentation, I may need to restart the cluster nodes. In this case, can I do the following steps to ensure minimal downtime?
Server1 = Active Node, Server2 = Passive Node
1. Reboot Server2.
2. When Server2 is up again, failover the Active node to Server2.
3. Reboot Server1.
Any assistance and guidance would be great. I've referred to the Installation ReadMe and the Service Pack Help file that is recommended that you read before installing.

in my experience with SP2 you have to reboot both nodes since it will upgrade files on both nodes and the shared SQL files on the shared storage. it's pretty smart in that it upgrades everything on both nodes.
even pre-SP2 i would have to reboot both nodes if it asked for a reboot

This cluster also has multiple instances. Should I install the SP on all instances first and then reboot? It makes sense to me to do it that way if I have to reboot.
