Installing most recent CU's

  • I want to install SQL Server 2012 SP3 CU5. The SP's are cumulative, so I don't have to install SP1 and 2 after installing SQL 2012. Then I could apply CU5. But what I was wondering is whether I could just install SQL 2012 and then the SP3 CU5 install, and skip a step? Does the "cumulative" in CU mean I can skip the SP3 install?

    Thanks,

  • No, you can't skip the SP3 installation. It's a cumulative update upon the SP install.

As written on the Microsoft page:

    Prerequisites

To apply this cumulative update package, you must be running SQL Server 2012 SP3.

  • No shortcuts then 🙂

So, in the process of applying MSSQL 2012 SP3 CU6 to a new installation (it's probably obvious that I am new to this), I noticed in the final screen of each install, there's a green check mark next to all of the features I'd selected for the install. So my next question is ...

I skipped the Reporting Services install, for instance. We don't need it. But let's say that later on we do. I've always assumed I'd go back to the MSSQL 2012 original installation exe to request an added feature. But I never thought about adding new features in the context of SP's and CU's. So, would I just go through the same sequence, but for each of the 3 steps (original SQL 2012 install files, SP3 installation exe, and CU6 exe) just make sure that I'm selecting the checkbox next to Reporting Services when picking features to install/upgrade?

    Thanks,
