install sql server 2008 on the same server with sql reporting service 2005

  • We would like to upgrade SQL reporting service from sql 2005 standard to sql server 2008 standard.

Currently the reporting service of sql 2005 installed on a single server with a database engine that hosts only report server databases.

What we found is business intelligence development studio for 2008 doesn't work with reporting service of sql 2005, so developers have to install BIDs in both version for developing database applications and SQL reports.

That's why we would like to install reporting service 2008. and is it possible to install another instance of reporting service 2008 on the same server of that has 2005 installed, and after we migrate the database, then remove 2005, I know to have a new server is the best option, but not sure if different versions of reporting service instances are Ok to install on the same server to save some budget.

I know sql 2005 use iis, but sql 2008 doesn't use it.

And I read somewhere, that install on the same computer the Encryption key will overwrite the exsitng version of sql encryption key, and make it no longer works.

Any practical experience of installing reporting service on the same server side by side like this?

Is it pretty risky or not?

    Thanks

  • Move to adminstration forum.
