Increasing sample size from 10 to 20% leads to higher CPU utilization?

  • On a fairly large DB (30 gb) with high xaction volumes, I bumped up the sample percentage on the UPDATE STATISTICS job from 10 to 20 percent.  Now things seem to be executing within the same time, but CPU utilization seems to have spiked...anyone have experience with this?  My knowledge of stats gathering is that more is better...anyone seen to the contrary?

  • never seen this. increasing %age causes stats update to run longer. One point to remember is that if you have auto update stats on then the auto stats will rebuild all your 20% stats back to 10% - I don't actually know how it achieves this but it might explain the spikes if it re does the stats for every query ?
