Inactive Subscription For Transactional Replicatn

  • I have the following message for one out of 6 subscribers to the same publication.

The subscription(s) have been marked inactive and must be reinitialized. NoSync subscriptions will need to be dropped and recreated.

This subscription won't let me start resynchronizing. Does reinitialized mean I must start the snapshot replication Agentt?

I tried to test doing this in our dev environment. What I want to happen is that after I start the snapshot I only want the inactive subscription to get the new snapshot and not the other 5 since they seem to be fine.

Will starting the snapshot agent cause all 6 to be reinitialized? Or just the ones I want done?

  • As near as I can tell it was marked inactive at about 2:34PM today. What would cause it to get marked as inactive?

  • Usually because there were transactions targetted for the subscriber that were never distributed. Usually when a sub expires you run a new snapshot and you're back in business.

  • I am planning to mark that subscription for reinitiallization and then start the snapshot. Unfortunately I must wait until 9PM to do this so I don't empty and/or drop the tables while our clients are using them.

Hopefully everything will go smoothly. Our DBA is on vacation until the end of December and that leaves me as the acting DBA until his return. One of my weakest points is replication.

  • Another question. I can easily mark a subscription for reinitialization and then start the snapshot agent. My question is, after I do that will the subscription allow me to start synchronizing? In our dev environment it automatically does this because the subscription is synchronizing when I tell it to reinitialize. However, in our production environment ths subscription is not synchronizing right now and won't start.

  • Once the snapshot is applied the subscriber should automatically get changes after - assuming both logreader and distribution agent are running.

  • Thanks. I was working on this last night in between sending e-mails to you. I got replication working again around 10PM. Everything seems fine this morning.
