Importance of the fmt file (Bulk Insert)

  • I have been messing around with a solution for a customer and need to do a BULK INSERT from a Tab delimited file.

I have no control of the data that is being exported (the Tab delmited file) so my thought was using the format file to protect the database. Would I get that protection from a format file?

It depends on what you mean by "Protect". If you need to be reactive to any data issues within the files, then you may be better off with the flexibility of SSIS.
