images not displaying from cached or snapshot report

  • Hello All:

This is my first post, and I'm hoping you can help.

Using SSRS 2005, I get the same problem for several different reports when using images.

If I set the execution parameter to use the most current data and not cache, then images render fine.

However, if you set the report to point to a cached instance or snapshot, the images do not render and all I get is an empty rectangle with a small red X. I can sometimes remedy this with multiple attempts at refreshing the page, or right-clicking each image and selecting "show-picture". This happens with interactive reports, too. The first time a user pulls the report, everything is fine. But if they sort a table or apply a different parameter against the cache, then the images disappear.

If it's just a company logo, that's relatively innocuous. But when I've got a dashboard type of report where all my charts are rendered as images with ChartFX or Dundas, then the whole of the content of the report is empty.

I'd rather not ask my client to right-click->show picture for every chart.

Nor would I prefer to let hundreds of users make the same request against the database, when a cache or snapshot will do.

    Please help.

  • My band-aid solution for this was to add a refresh script to the page.

It basically refreshes the page once, triggered by onLoad of the body tag.

For about a second, the user sees a page full of red X's, then the screen flickers and then images and charts start to appear.

This doesn't address the underlying problem with Reporting Services--there must be a better answer...

    Any insight would be appreciated.

  • Does no one else really have this problem? Or is this the wrong forum?

I thought it was a problem with third-party add-ins like ChartFX or Dundas Charts, so I switched everything back to native Reporting Services charts.

I'm still getting the problem where both images and charts are not rendering.

The images are imbedded, and the charts, well, I don't know what else I can do.

    Please help.
