Hello,
I was wondering what other people did when faced with a decision as to whether to put on the BI tools, when the company is not sure if they would be useful in the future or not. I was thinking that it would be sensible in that case to load them on during the initial install of the SQL instance on a cluster, and just disable the services until such a time as they are needed, as it can troublesome (apparently) to add them at a later date. I know that Analysis services cannot be added later, not sure about Integrated and Reporting services though. This is in regards to SQL 2008 if it make a difference.
Generally, what is the view in this?

My advice is to plan properly and then only install what you need. Anything that is installed for no particular reason and then configured as an afterthought is likely not to get set up properly. Also, the more doors you put in your house, the easier it is for someone to break in, even if you lock them. Having said that, we always install Integration Services since maintenance plans relies on it, and it provides an extra option for loading or extracting data.

Hello,
Thanks for the reply, I'd certainly configure them properly, no doubt about that, but funnily enough I'll be putting on IS for the same reasons that you have.
