IE 8 and Office Live Workspace

  • Since some month I'm using Office Live Workspace and it worked fine for me. But after last updates of IE - my current version is 8.0.6001.18783 - I cannot access Office Live Workspace anymore with IE.

When I enter http://workspace.office.live.com/ IE redirects about five to ten times to http://workspace.office.live.com/?wa=wsignin1.0 and ends up with following error message:

The Windows Live Network is unavailable from this site for one of the following reasons:

    • This site may be experiencing a problem
    • The site may not be a member of the Windows Live Network

    You can:

    • You can sign in or sign up at other sites on the Windows Live Network, or try again later at this site.

    I already tried

    • 32 bit version and 64 bit version (running Server 2008 x64)
    • Clean browser caches
    • Restart IE

Firefox works fine but Office Live Workspace is based on SharePoint, so IE should be the tool to use.

    Any suggestions would be great!

  • Did you ever get an answer to this question? I'm experiencing the same thing...

  • Being based on SharePoint should actually make it browser independent, at least that is one of the things I got out of our training a couple of weeks ago.

I'll check with a few of the others that were in the training as well.

As for specifically dealling with Office LiveSpace, not sure as I am not familiar with it.

  • @paul-2: No, still having the same issue.

@Lynn: Thanks for your effort! It's just strange that FireFox seems to handle Office Live better than IE on a x64 box.

  • Just checked with a couple of my coworkers and they say the same thing, SharePoint should be browser agnostic, meaning the modern browsers should all work. Why IE 8 would have more issues with a Microsoft product, who knows.

  • I don't know what it is about Microsoft and IE8, but anyone at my company who upgraded to IE8 (accidentally of course since it isn't approved) can no longer use SharePoint sites.

Something in the coding changes the site coding. For example, menus down the side are now across the top - but the conversion didn't work well and they are almost unusable. There are other issues also... but as I said IE8 users can't use SharePoint sites.

  • Thanks for your responses.

At work I use IE8 on XP x32, without any problems using SharePoint or OfficeLive there. In my case it just don't work on a x64 system.

Definitely something to keep in mind. We are starting a project to deploy MOSS 2007 here where I work. We are already using WSS 3.0 on a limited basis.

    Flo,

I think I know your problem Office is x86 application so I think it is loading to x86 IE without issues but in x64 operating system the default IE is x64 so you may need x86 IE to connect to Office Live. Check below for some x64 issues.

  • Hi Gift

I already tried IE x32 and IE x64. Same behavior in both versions :crying:

Hope this becomes fixed in seven.

    Thanks

    Good idea!

Just tried. I can add https://login.live.com but I cannot add http://workspace.office.live.com since only secure sockets are allowed.

Login to live.com works, I just cannot access the office section with IE. Firefox works fine. Still strange.

    Edit: Fixed quotes...

I am in IE 7 and you can leave the https requirement button unenabled so if that button is not enabled you can manually add the work space url.

  • Maybe I've been out too long yesterday...

Found the check-box and after un-selecting I could add "http:" pages. Tried again, after about 30 or 40 server redirects I end up with error message "... Windows Live Network is unavailable ..." (as always). The message is wrong since Firefox works fine at same time. I attached a screen-shot, upper part is IE, lower part is Firefox. I tried to make the picture as small as possible since I don't know your desktop settings.

    Thanks for all your effort

  • Did anyone find an answer to why one gets...

The Windows Live Network is unavailable from this site for one of the following reasons:

•This site may be experiencing a problem

•The site may not be a member of the Windows Live Network

    You can:

•You can sign in or sign up at other sites on the Windows Live Network, or try again later at this site.

I can log on to other accounts but just not one of them.
