Is it true that sql 2005 licenses can no longer be purchased? We need to move an application to a new sql server box so we'll have to buy a license. I wasn't ready to even evaluate sql 2008 yet, but they're telling me we can't buy a sql 2005 Enterprise license. Hard to believe. If true do I need a new version of sql management studio to administer 2008?
Is there a 2008 application that tests your databases for compatibility like we had for 2005?

You may not buy 2005 from Microsoft but you could buy it from their customers inventory because if you look you could still buy 2000 today not just from Microsoft for production, for testing all are in both Technet and MSDN account downloads.

Also, although I've not read the 2008 EULA, you can typically downgrade your license to run an older supported version... I.E. buy a 2008 license and install and use 2005, just have to make sure it's the same level, you can't downgrade 2008 STD to 2005 EE for instance.

Yes, downgrade rights are still available:
Look for the question "How do I downgrade to SQL Server 2005?" in Licensing. If you need media (the physical DVDs), you're best bet is to contact a reseller like ASAP.
