How Do You Know You Are Right?

  • AI definitely won't be taking over anytime soon. I was working on a project this week in which we were trying to see if Copilot could be convinced to generate the code for building the tables and performing the bronze to silver and silver to gold transformations. While it did produce some code, not all of it was workable and I think I spent more time trying to convince Copilot to consistently use the actual columns rather that the 5 random columns it tended to generate for each table.

Once I thought I had the prompts right, I put the notebook into a new workspace and tried running them to see if they produced the same results. Nope. Not only did Copilot revert to only picking 5 columns for each table, but he also decided that the datalake had individual csv files for each table that he had to read to get the schemas - a completely whackadoodle thing since nothing in my prompts even hinted at csv files (the schema information was in a pdf that I downloaded to the datalake). I'm still trying to figure out how the exact same prompts worked in one workspace but not another.

I also noticed that Copilot seems to consistently start to give me major problems - including simply failing to respond at all - after about 2 PM AZT  (5 PM EDT - Copilot is in USEast2) each day. It's like Copilot goes out for a beer at that time and I can't get any more useful work out of him.

  • Do you really still have a set of encyclopedias?  I haven't seen any in decades. I think mine were bought about 1966 with the ten years of update volumes.  But I will say I trusted them far more than internet crap.  In those days they were pretty factual, not like I expect today which would be opinion and agenda.

  • I completely agree with you, Louis, that having someone to bounce ideas off of helps so much in searching for answers you need. Sometimes that isn't always possible, such as when I had to take over for the former TFS Administrator's job, as he was leaving. I received no training and the business I work for doesn't send anyone in IT for training or conferences, ever. I had no clue as to anything in TFS. This resulted in a year's frustration for myself and all my customers, because when I went to Stack Overflow (SO) to learn the basic terms I was prevented from doing so. There is one person on SO who won't tolerate any beginner's questions. He will vote down all such questions, and because he has the power on SO he will prevent anyone else answering the question. I'm saying there are people out there who do not care anything for you, your employer, the budgets you have to live with, the other people and projects being delayed getting any answer to, etc. To these people who love to play God, only the most difficult, esoteric questions are permissible. All other such questioners must be punished for not asking esoteric questions.
