hostname doesn''t match MAC Address (net_address)

  • I just ran into a screwy one a few days ago and wonder if anyone else has come across this.

    This is SQL2K SP4 Standard Ed. on a Win2K Server with Dell PE4600 2 x 2.2GHz Hyper and 4GB RAM.

I had a blocking situation. It looks like it was just a long runnning query. So I go into the EM and look and find the spid 154, hostname 1001508-, blocking. So I then sort by hostname, and look what comes up.

    SPIDStatusLoginHostNamenet_addressDBName

    114sleepingsa1001508-000D56E95CA8ISIR
    122sleepingsa1001508-000D56E95CA8ISIR
    153sleepingsa1001508-94DD8E8E3523ISIR
    154sleepingsa1001508-000874AF79E2ISIR
    158sleepingsa1001508-000874AF79E2ISIR
    163sleepingsa1001508-00065B95F0DAISIR

I have no problem with one client have multiple connections to a SQL server. But notice the net_address (MAC addr) column. So I fire up Angy scaner and run it across the IP range and come up with the list below:

    IPHostnameMAC_Address
    10.65.3.29jytq11.domain.com00-06-5B-CF-89-83
    10.65.3.6gkzkk11.domain.com00-06-5B-EA-A2-AC
    10.65.2.16178tc821.domain.com00-08-74-AB-C3-4D
    10.65.3.787TG82100-08-74-AD-17-62
    10.65.0.207jd31g01.domain.com00-08-74-AF-79-E2
    10.65.0.210FWGT94100-0D-56-E9-5C-A8
    10.65.3.15fbs5g61.domain.com00-11-43-65-E9-64

And to add insult to injury 1001508- wasn't even powered up.

I can live with the problem, but is it some sort of bug? Anyone know?

A little bit of this and a little byte of that can cause bloatware.

  • just a wilde shot ...

The hostname is determinde by data from the connection string.

    What's the application name that's shown ?

In case of excell or ms-access connections, the hostname-part is filledout at designtime or the sheet or db. When these files are moved/copied afterward, and used, you will not see connections with the hostname of the new pc or server ! , but you'll still see the hostname from designtime !

Maybe this is what's going on ...

Who am I ? Sometimes this is me but most of the time this is me

  • That's the answer. That was the machine that originally linked in the the tables to the Access DB.
