Does it make sense to subscribe to a hosted witness service, instead of adding a Witness Server to your current infrastructure?

Not worth the hassel. You can use SQL Server Express (free!) as a witness for database mirroring. Why would I pay for this functionality when it is easily setup in-house?

I agree, and was thinking the same thing. The only reason I posted was the thought of having to purchase a seperate server just for witness.
True, you could just throw up a VM and buy another windows license (which is probably the cheapest way to do it), but why add overhead to your current infrastructure in you don't have to?
Thanks for your input.

You don't need a dedicated server. It can run on a desktop-type PC if you like. It can share with something else (though should not be on the same server as principal or mirror)

True that. I did have one vote for yes, and another for "depends"... I suppose it all depends on your environment. Doesn't seem to be a popular idea, though 🙂
