Hello all,
I hope you can help me. I'm running SQL Server 2005 on Windows Server 2003. I accidentally deleted the SQL Server login BUILTIN\Administrators. All logins except sa disappeared. So I need to restore the master database, but the sa password isn't working. I'm still connected with my domain account, but I think I now have only public access. How can I restore the master database?

I figured it out. Turns out this is easy. Local admins on the server have sysadmin rights from sqlcmd when the database is in single-user mode. I was able to restore the master database using sqlcmd and Windows authentication.

or you could have re created the BUILTIN\Administrators login and put it back into sysadmins 😉
