Help me blag a new job!!!

  • I'm applying for a great job, in which I have all the requirements, except knowledge of SQL Server!!!

Hopefully I shouldn't have too much trouble picking it up but need to be able to talk on the subject in the interview and persuade them to take me on and send me on a training course for SQL!

Can you kind souls help me get a general overview of the program and tell me what it does and its applications etc.

Any information would be greatly appreciated

    Cheers!

  • Eleanor,

I'm sorry, but I'm not sure that you're going to get a great deal of help with that particular request.  Depending on the type of experience you require, it could take quite a while to pick it up.  Based on your comment requesting a general overview, I assume that as of now, you know nothing at all about SQL Server.  A fast food establishment might hire you with no experience, knowing that they can train you to make burgers, and you'll be up and running within a few days.  SQL Server is whole different story though.  There's a whole "programming language" to learn, and administration is not for the "newbie".  Ideally, you would gain experience by working under someone who has the experience and knowledge to share, and gradually gain experience and responsibilities.  Another avenue for learning is right here by asking questions about specific problems that you encounter.  If you will spend some time just browsing through these forums, I think you'll see what I mean.  I wish you luck in your job search.

  • Eleanor,

I doubt whether you will find much help around here. SQL Server pros aren't going to be willing to help people "blag" a job in their profession because it kinda belittles that said profession.

Some of the terminology that you have used in your post leads me to think that you have no knowledge whatsoever of SQL Server (I apologise if this assumption is wrong). I would recommend that if you don't know what ALL of the following terms mean that you haven't a chance of blagging any knowledge of SQL Server:

    Database
    RDBMS
    T-SQL
    Query Analyzer
    Enterprise Manager
    Books Online
    DDL/DML

Hope this helps. Regardless of the above I wish you good luck!

I strongly question that the people here are not willing to help!

I assume you're not going to apply for a DBA position here, right? Anyway, I wouldn't cheat on your knowledge of SQL Server. You'll move yourself only into deep trouble when it turns out that you pretended something. And I do believe that it will turn out that way. That's no question of it, but rather when.

Anyway, to get you started. have a look here http://www.microsoft.com/sql. You can also download SQL Server's exceptionell good online help from MS for free.
