This is a critical part of security imho

making sure that outsiders are always escorted can prevent embarrassing incidents from occurring.

It is amazing how many visitors have free reign on-site once they get past the initial security checkpoint.

Nobody questions the guy wearing a ball cap and carrying a stack of pizza boxes. If he asks where the DBA team sits, they'll gladly swipe and hold open the door to the server room. :Whistling:

I am sure that I have mentioned this before but it's relevant so I'll say it again (sorry if it bores you).

I was in the largest data centre in Europe (at that moment in time) and had been escorted to my client's servers. On the way my escort pointed to various stacks whilst stating which company each was for. Most were household names and many hosted their public facing websites. Once we reached my target stack of servers I was left alone (even though the escort knew it broke protocol). Part of me thought that it would be funny to go to those well known companies' stacks and start pulling network cables. I reckoned it would take them minutes to get to me once they realised that there was a physical problem in the data centre and it would have taken some time to reinstate all the cabling I could have undone. I could have made the news!!!

Of course, the reality is much more boring than that. I chuckled to myself and carried on working.
