Ghost clean up task lagging

  • We are in a situation where we have very busy OLTP system which is doing lot of deletes and then inserts,

the ghost cleanup task cannot keep up, its always lagging behind and we are facing lot of performance problem.

Is there a way to solve performance problem. We dont want to rebuid or reindex table.

Also if Ghost cleanup task is executed every 10 seconds.

What is the possiblity that previous Ghost clean up task is still running and new one is started, overlapping each other.

    Thanks.

    1) Can you tell me exactly what method you used to identify that the Ghost Cleanup was the cause of your performance problems?

    2) Since you are posting on SQL 2012 forum I will assume you don't have SQL 2008/R2, which had bug(s) related to ghost cleanup.

    3) If you have periods of slack time, you could force a hard cleanup: sp_clean_db_free_space. Be sure to read up on that in BOL if you want try it.

    4) Is your system doing lots of scans in addition to the DELETEs? I believe the scans queue up the ghosted records for deletion and can cause a lot of work.

    5) You can disable ghosting (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/920093) but you REALLY best know what you are doing to mess with that.

    6) Is you system well tuned? If you are like ALL of the clients I get it isn't. 😎 If you have a lot of useless (or bloated) indexes you could be ghosting unnecessarily.
