Battled interesting error yesterday figured I would post about it since more people are moving to VM's
VM's x64
Windows Server 2008 R2 x64
SQL Server 2008 sp1 x64
I received the following errors:
Msg 7391, Level 16, State 2, Line 3
The operation could not be performed because OLE DB provider "SQLNCLI10" for linked server "SERVERNAME.REDMOND.CORP.MICROSOFT.COM" was unable to begin a distributed transaction
And Msg 8501, Level 16, State 3, Line 1
Well after verifying MSDTC was configured on Server A and Server B and recreated my linked server objects, i decided to look at the store procs...after about 10 mins it hit me....this works in other testing environments store procs and all...
So i grabbed dtcping and received this error (WARNING:the CID values for both test machines are the same), after our network team change the CID values I restarted MSDTC and distributed transactions work! yay!
The two db servers are testing VM's which were cloned.. so if you are cloning DB boxes make sure you change the CID values or MSDTC will not work period.
