Gadgets

  • Flying Car

OK, while you're reading this, I'm in sunny Cancun, enjoying the last day of vacation, hopefully with sunny weather and adult beverages made from a blue agave plant. But I want to be sure you still have a good Friday poll, so here's one I've been saving for awhile:

What is the coolest gadget you've seen?

I'm kind of thinking of something in the technological sense. The flying car above, something like I saw as a kid in Popular Science, is interesting, but as I've grown older, I'm less enamored with flying, so it's not so cool to me.

Here's two that are kind of opposites: a Fog theft deterrent, which looks cool if you're worried about your car or business and you have good police response. Then there's the bluetooth rifle, for which I'm not sure there are any legitimate uses. At least not any I can think of at this time.

There are the bike steppers, the lego hard drives, and of course, the Segway. As you can see, gadgets in motion seem to capture my eye the most.

However I'm a transport guy, so I have to say that I thought this was pretty good, and possibly something I could use around the ranch: the Zap truck.

  • For "I've got to get me one of these" value I have to vote for the reactable - a musical instrument developed by students at the university of Barcelona as a research project - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0h-RhyopUmc - very cool

  • I guess you are back now and hope you had a good sunny time. Here in Baton Rouge we've had too much sun, despite the rain all around. I would like a weather control gadget to make it cooler here.

But reality. OK, I thought of this years ago, but now it is real. a jukebox at a local bar that can download thousands of songs from the internet (for 2 credits) in addition to the thousands already on it.

I also like the wierd little truck and plane you showed. I would like a personal helicopter built from a kit.

  • stunelp, that is really fantastic!!

  • Boring, but DVR!  Guess that might not be considered a gadget.  But.....I can't tell you how much I like my DVR!  I'm a Formula 1 fan and watch every race.  I tryu to watch it live, and used to.  Since a lot of those races are in the middle of the night here in central US, it was rather inconvenient.  Now just set to record, and start watching whenever I wake up.  For some reason though I still tend to wake up about the time a race starts.  Or my dog wakes me up, I think she is tuned to the F-1 transmissions.

  • I have a Segway and love it.

Living in New England you don't get to use it year round but it is a blast when the weater warms up and you can go for a spin.

I only wish I lived closer to where I work so I could drive it to work and save a ton of money on gas.

  • Now if I could only learn how to spell ---WEATHER---

  • My current favorites are the Tesla Roadster: http://www.teslamotors.com and surface computing:http://link.brightcove.com/services/link/bcpid932579976/bclid932553050/bctid933742930

  • I don't think this is a real device, but something that could take cookie crumbs or chip crumbs and make a whole chip or cookie out of it! The Fusion Chip Machine. Would be especially useful when you're eating salsa and chips out of the bag and run out of the big chips and only the small broken ones are left.

  • Somebody else got it first, but I would really like to start a racing league with these:

    Wicked fast electric cars

I think it would be a great way to promote electric vehicles. The main reaction I get when I say 'electric car' is "why would you want to go so slow" - and people need to know that's not the way it has to be.

I am currently designing the world's best martini shaker, but it's not as cool as the electric cars. That truck reminds me of the 2CV - people didn't like that thing, but it served its purpose very well, which it looks like the Zap will too. Would make a nice golf cart.

  • FTA, "Our fog system is triggered the same way as a normal car alarm, so accidental discharges just don't happen"

    Uh-huh...

  • This is mobile security device is a cool new gadget...

  • This may not be the greatest gadget, but the MoGo mouse is practical and useful.  If you haven't heard of it, the MoGo is a Bluetooth mouse that collapses and fits in your PC card slot - and charges up while its in there.

I think it's great!  It keeps me from having to use the touchpad all the time and I don't have to carry around a larger mouse.  Now, if only they could get scrolling functionality...

  • I'm in with the Air Car (the hybrid, OneCAT Model, anyhow).

  • I wonder if the glycol/water mixture of the fog deterrent would actually freeze in the winter here? Maybe even flash freeze...

That would then be an added selling point of the product - freezing the thief into place!

I know my current fog machine that uses a glycol mix does not do well outside at Halloween time in cool temperature (around 25 -35F). In fact dry ice performs poorly too.

And that is not all that cold either.
