Force user logoff for data dump

  • This is for "my" database, but I am not directly responsible for backups. The guy who handles backups says that the backup on my database fails intermittently with a message that says "unable to put the database in single user mode". The data dump is set to run at 1:15 am every morning, and I have my single deployed app set up so that it automatically shuts itself down at 1 am and won't let users back on until 6 am. It does this without initiating a connection to the database. I'm told the problem is that one or more users are logged on, and my app is being blamed, but that's (theoretically, at least) impossible given that I shut it down at the client level and force users off that way. Is that really what the problem is, and, if so, is there a way to force all users off a database (SQL Server 2K) at the server side at a specific time? Thanks.

  • Well, first of all, a database does not have to be in single user mode for a backup to take place.  Odds are, he is bringing the database into single user mode to do some other sort of maintenance.  You may want to get some clarification on this from your 'backup guy'.

Check out this kbase on a bug in the maintenance plan setup when it is set up to repair minor problems.  I would suggest shutting this option down and this will prevent SQL Server from trying to go into Single User mode.  You may still want to get clarification from your 'backup guy' to make sure that he is not intentionally putting the DB into Single User mode for some other reason.  My hunch is that he set up a maintenance plan to do both backups and integrity checks/repairs.

  • Thanks, I'll pass that on.
