I asked Claude to investigate a hunch about a code base and catalogue the results. I could have done this manually, but it would have taken days, if not weeks, of effort, none of which was billable work.
Validating Claude's output took a couple of hours. There were a few mistakes in its findings. Using Claude as a collaborator is proving effective.

It's an eager, helpful assistant that sometimes doesn't quite understand my point of view.
Usually because I haven't explained myself well. When I do, it gets more and more effective at helping me.

For me the challenge is using an AI without it costing me too much. For over 2 years I have paid for GitHub Copilot Pro, which I found useful, although I didn't use it more than a couple of times for Agentic assistance. Now, GitHub has done away from Copilot Pro (although because I had renewed before that announcement I have about 10 months more to use it). And now I am considering other options, like Claude Code. But what has me very worried about Claude Code is how expensive it is. A friend of mine has been paying $100/month for Claude Code. That's what I paid for an annual subscription to GitHub Copilot Pro. And on a recent episode of the podcast Dot Net Rocks, I heard the guest say he pays $2000/month for the AIs he uses!! My wife would divorce me if I spent that much money on AI monthly.
I would love to hear what AIs people are using. And if you don't mine, how much it is costing you.
Kindest Regards, Rod Connect with me on LinkedIn.

I use Claude (from Redgate), but I am careful. I tend to stick with Sonnet for most things, only jumping to Opus if I need to, or coming back to Haiku sometimes to just test quick search knowledge. However, I stop and think about it and try not to waste costs unnecessarily.
I do try to keep an eye on costs (settings/usage) to get an understanding of the value I get for what I do. I surprisingly don't necessarily use this every day as I have to stop and think about tasks and how to structure them. Often, I don't see an amazing payback from lots of things, but I think part of that is I need to accept a lower efficiency and learn to use Claude better. I'm hoping to do some of that in the next month.
