Extremely slow WMI performance on SQL server with multiple instances.

  • Hi and thanks in advance for any assistance.

I've got a few servers each running Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard and SQL 2008 R2 Express. Each server has about 15 instances of SQL installed. We use WhatsUp from ipswitch to monitor disk, cpu, memory etc via WMI. It seems that once we get 2 instances of SQL server installed WMI starts stalling and failing to load up. For example we could use a tool like WMI Explorer and it will just sit there indefinitely waiting for the classes to be displayed. We finally have to restart the WMI service.. wait about 2 minutes and then try to launch WMI Explorer. When it finally opens it has about 1900 classes and I presume this is probably high. The WMIPrvse.exe can have multiple instances and range up to 90,000K of memory each both 32/64 bit. My question is why is this so slow? Is there a way to possibly remove the SQL performance counters... is that the root cause? The server performs very quickly.. disk, ram, and CPU are well withing normal operation specs.

We've had this issue for about 2 years and it's gotten to the point when I'm desperate to find a solution. It also existed with SQL 2008 and Windows Server 2008.

Thanks for taking the time to help.
