Encrypting SQL backups

  • HI. I was asked by my supervisor if our sql backups are encrypted. I run sql backups from enterprise manager and no 3rd party product is involved. From my knowlege, sql backups are not encrypted. We are running sql 2000 standard edition. If they are encrypted please correct me. If not, can I get some best practices on getting these backups encrypted.

    Thank you so much,

    Juanita

  • You are correct they are not encrypted. I know Red Gate's SQL backup can encrypt if you want. I assume other 3rd party backup products could also do it.

There are also 3rd party encryption software some of which is available from the command line including the windows cipher command, which I have not spent enough time on to make work.

  • Thank you so much. I was told that there is EFS on the win 2000 os.. but these db's are on win 2003 server. I did see Red Gate had a product.
