  I get the above error when attempting to connect to a SQL Server running on my local stand-alone machine.

  I think this is something to do with ODBC as I cannot start SQL Server Agent (it starts but then stops) and cannot create an ODBC User DSN for SQL Server. I get the same message when trying to connect through Query Analyser.

  The SQL Server Agent is running under the local system account.

  Any ideas?

  I've no idea what caused this problem. However, I solved it by installing MDAC 2.8.
