  Hi there,

  Just wondering if anyone knows whether it's possible to create Domain-Independent Availability Groups on a WSFC without having a DNS server?

  Every guide I've found seems to require a separate DNS server, whereas I'm wondering if simply adding all the required IP addresses for each resource into the hosts file on each node would be sufficient?

  Obviously having a Listener would no longer be possible, and clients would need to connect to each node via IP, but I'm unsure whether it's even possible/advisable to get a WSFC to work reliably in this way?

  Hi,

  if you use a listener, I think you need a DNS server, because the IP from the listener will change to the active node if a failover occurs.

  But we do not know how you will use your AOAG.

  Hi Andreas,

  No we wouldn't be able to use a listener as you say - we would need to refer to each node separately by IP address and handle the failover between these elsewhere.

  I believe the configuration using only host files should technically work, but I'm not sure whether there may be problems in terms of cluster stability/reliability/anything else?

  We're using an AWS environment with no domain or DNS server, so I'm looking for a way to get around it. I've also read that clusterless AGs are not recommended for DR, so thought I'd stick with Domain-Independent AGs.
