Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard can only utilize 4 CPUs. SQL Server 2008 R2 Enterprise Edition can utilize 8 CPUs. If you install SQL Server 2008 R2 Enterprise Edition on a server that is using Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard, can SQL still use 8 CPUs or is it limited by the 4 CPUs that the OS can only use?

I havnt actually tried this but I wouldnt think so. But I can tell you that running two instances of SQL R2 Standard on the same box as Server Enterprise with 8 sockets (4 cores on each) and splitting cores over the two instances (16 each) as well at the server RAM 64 gig on each instance, works a treat. We also have this clustered to a VM farm (passive) and again, it works brilliantly. Its quite a nifty way of getting round buying an Enterprise Licence
