Disk Space

  • I would like to know how to increase Drive space (SAN) on existing Drive. I have drives which holds data files on one, and log files on another Drive (SAN). Is it possible to increase disk space on existing drive, let say my drive(data) has 200Gig I want to increase to 600 Gig.

    Question:

    1) Is it possible to increase current disk space from 200 Gig to 600 Gig on existing. If possible how to do it.

    2) If it is possible, is it a good idea to do it on drive which has production files. how safe it is to do it.

3)or Do I have to create additional drives?

    Thanks in advnce

    1) Depends on the SAN, the OS and your storage team

It is possible to grow a LUN on the SAN and have Windows see the additional growth with no issues. However, I would always recommend doing that safely by taking down SQL Server first just to prevent any corruption.

FWIW - anytime I run into this situation I re-evaluate the system requirements. In most cases, I find that I end up getting new LUNs and moving things to better fit the system and how it is being used now.
