Hi,
Is there a way or a tool to use to discover MSSQL 2005 instances or installs on local pcs over a network? We want to track unauthorized installs ie: trial versions; illegal copies, etc. Do installs "broadcast" themselves?
Many thanks. Jeff

They don't necessarily broadcast. Does your organization have any asset management tools like SMS or Altiris?
If not, you can use a tool like SQLRecon. It was developed by Chip Andrews who runs SQLSecurity.com. You can find it here:
It is the successor to the various SQLPing tools and it's free. It'll use any known method to detect SQL Servers. If you have domain admin rights, it knows what registry keys to look in to detect SQL Server instances. It will detect SQL Server 2005.
