Differences between SQL 2000 and 2005

  • I currently use 2000, haven't even touched 2005 yet. Can someone

give a quick list of some of the major differences/added features

    from 2000 and 2005?

    thanks

  • I'll list the changes that are important to me or that I am excited about, MS would doubtlessly prioritise them differently.

    1. SQL Server Integration Services is the new version of DTS. It is a complete rewrite of the product rather than an upgrade and will put give MS an ETL tool on an equal footing with the big ETL players.

    2. Analysis Services has been completely re-architected to include (such as) multiple hierarchies in a dimension, KPIs, perspectives, and many other things all hosted in a new conceptual object called the Unified Dimensional Model (UDM).

    3. CLR Integration - Stored procedures/functions can now be written in a .Net language.

    4. Table partitioning improvements

    5. Reporting Services enhancements

There's loads more. Steve's link to the Microsoft SQL Server site will tell you alot more than what I have included here.

  • DTS needs Proxy accocunt. More security.

No system tables. DMV's populated on the fly.

    Service Broker.

SQLImail needs no OUTLOOK or Exchange.

Notification Services / inbuilt and upgraded Reporting services.

Certificates (with user defined rights and expiration policies) for SP's.

Keys to lock and unlock assemblies.

CLR integration, although I wonder if it is really going to be used much considering the strong T-SQL.

Faster database creatiuon, better memory management.

    Kindest Regards,
