Difference Desktop & Standard Edition?

  • Hi there,

I have 2 questions. First: would there be a performance difference between SQL Server Personal edition or SQL Server Standard Edition on the same PC? Personal would run under WinXP, Standard would run under W2K. I am testing the performance of a large slect/insert process and I wonder, if I should install W2K on the testPC. Yes, it is a pc, not a server.

Also, since this relates to a SQL7 database, of which the dbfile can be attached without problem on a SQL2K server, would this be different from using the upgradewizard?

    TIA,

  • Hans,

I would install Win2K only if the final place where the database will be running is Win2K.  As far as detaching from SQL2K to SQL7 system make sure that the database is in 7.0 compatability prior to detaching from SQL2K.  Also, you need to make sure beforehand there is no code that takes advantage of any new features that were added in SQL2K.

As far as performanceboth should act the same.  Only difference should be concurrent users...

Of course I may be wrong and the gentlemen and ladies that have been using SQL for MUCH longer than I will set me right as always to keep me from hurting myself

  • When a SQL7 db is attached to SQL2K it is converted, the same is true of restoring a db from a backup.

A SQL2K database cannot be attached to SQL7.

I have not used upgrade wizard but I would presume that is also converts the db's.

Far away is close at hand in the images of elsewhere.
